Techno is an umbrella term used to describe many sub genres of electronic music. Tempo’s can range from 120-200 BPM + and vary dramatically in composition, style and type of sound used, although synthesised sounds prevail.
“Breaks” is an umbrella term used to categorise a wide variety of related genres from Hip Hop to Drum & Bass. These diverse genres all share their roots in the “breakbeat”, a sampled drum loop often lifted from a record which is then sped up, re-arranged or processed to form a new “break”.
UK Hardcore is a four beat genre (characterised by a 4/4 kick drum) with tempos typically ranging from 168-180 BPM. UK Hardcore’s roots hail from the early 90’s Rave scene, where the faster and less eclectic four beat genre began to differentiate itself from the older breakbeat orientated sound.
House music is a four beat genre with tempo’s ranging typically from 125-140 BMP. House’s roots are firmly rooted in 1970’s disco although the sound was really developed in Chicago and New York in the late 1970 and 80s, by DJ’s such as Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan while in Europe the early Italian sounds of producers like Georgio Moroder helped shape the sound. House was a distinct departure from Disco in it’s embrace of electronic instruments particularly bass sounds and synthesiser strings. Why not browse our House MIDI File packs here
