Logic Pro X Tutorial: Using Flex Time For WAV Audio Loops

October 15th 2014

WAV audio loops have never been known for their flexibility concerning time stretching, especially in previous versions of Logic.  Apple Logic 8 addressed the issue with the Follow Tempo feature, however this could only be applied to audio recorded in Logic, and not easily to pre-existing loops from sample libraries. Fortunately Logic X has addressed this with a fantastic new feature Flex Time.  This allows you to easily configure WAV loops to follow Logic’s master tempo using a slicing method not unlike that found in Recycle! and Acidized WAV Loops.  There is a very simple way to fix this in Logic X using the Flex Tool.

Here’s how to enable Flex Time for automatically stretching loops:

Method 1:

1. Import your chosen loop on to an empty Audio Track in the Arrange View timeline.

2. Change the master tempo to match that of the loop.

3. Click on the loop to select it in the Logic Arrange View timeline.

4. From the Main Menu select – Edit – Hide Pitch / Flex Time.

5. Click the Enable Flex Time button on the Audio Track drop down information tab.

Method 2 – Fast!:

You can also access Flex Time very quickly if you have Right Mouse Button: Open Tools Menu enabled in the Logic Preferences Menu – Logic Pro X – Preferences – General – Editing Tab. This will allow you to select the loop, right click and choose Flex Tool – (Keyboard shortcut R). This will allow you to instantly enable Flex on the selected loop by right clicking the loop and choosing Flex Tool from the drop down menu. You can then simply click on the loop and Flex Time will be enabled.

Our video shows this method in action on a breakbeat loop.

1. Open the Logic Preferences Menu – Logic Pro X – Preferences – General – Editing Tab.

2. Choose – Right Mouse Button: Open Tools Menu.

3. You can now select the loop, Right Mouse Click and choose Flex Tool  (Keyboard Shortcut R).

4. Click the loop using the Flex Tool and Flex Time will now be enabled for your selected loop.
