Our favorite free audio editor, Audacity, has received a major upgrade! If you’re not familiar with this PC and Mac application, it’s possibly the best choice for users who need to record and edit audio files—absolutely free!

In addition to its fully featured audio editing and recording capabilities, the new update introduces MIDI file playback with a simple piano roll style display. While editing MIDI isn’t possible, it’s a great way to preview your files directly within the app.

Audacity also comes loaded with its own super-useful audio effects suite, including the ability to locate and fix clipped audio. This is a godsend for anyone who’s spent hours recording great takes only to find that the best part of your file has an annoying clip or crackle! Other effects include filters, phaser, reverb, time stretching, and much more.
